Chapter End-of-Year Meeting
and Hurricane Party

Chapter members and their guests enjoyed a festive evening at Sugas Deep South to celebrate the end of a successful year. Special honorees were the three Lamar University students who received the Chapter’s 2007-2008 scholarships:
Jenny Brown,
Marilyn Gibbs,
Rebekah Patin;

and representatives from the Lamar Department of Accounting faculty:
Gisele Moss and Ann Watkins.

Congratulations to Kathy Steirman for winning a roundtrip ticket anywhere Southwest Airlines flies, given during the door prize drawing!

Community Involvement
Former Chapter president Brad Brown was honored by being selected, with Steve Forman, for the Newsmaker of the Year Award given by the Press Club of Southeast Texas. Presentation was made at a fundraising dinner June 6. Proceeds benefit the Press Club Memorial Scholarship awarded annually to Lamar University communication students.

Members of the Board of Directors represented the Chapter at a table purchased as an external image activity for the 2008-2009 year, with two-thirds of the cost to be reimbursed by TSCPA under its program to provide financial assistance to chapters for projects that promote a positive image of the CPA profession in their areas.

TSCPA News & Information

TSCPA Leadership Nominations for Year 2009-2010
The Nominations Committee needs input for key leadership positions. TSCPA members can submit suggestions for next year's Executive Board, directors-at-large (Board of Directors) and Texas members for the American Institute of CPAs Council.

The deadline for sending nominations is Aug. 15. The form is available online after logging in as a member. It also will be in the July/August issue of Today’s CPA magazine.

Financial Literacy
Between tornadoes and hurricanes (and sometimes both), all parts of Texas are vulnerable to storm damage. Put your financial disaster plan in place before it's time to batten down the hatch.

An online publication by the American Institute of CPAs, the American Red Cross and other partnering organizations covers recordkeeping, buying insurance, protecting your property, qualifying for government benefits, and more.

Access it through this link to TSCPA’s Financial Literacy Web site, www.ValueYourMoney.org.

Continue Enjoying Member Discounts and Services
Be sure you don’t miss a day of the discounts and services available to TSCPA members! Annual dues are payable now. If you haven’t yet responded to the dues notice e-mailed in April, please do so right away. If you did not receive an invoice, please e-mail Rosa Castillo rcastillo@tscpa.net or phone 800-428-0272 x 260 / 972-687-8560.

For details about the variety of benefits you get, go to the Benefits of Membership section A featured members-only benefit is access to the Center for Corporate Financial Leadership

Don’t let the title fool you: it can be useful to members in all areas of practice, not just those in industry. Research assistance by professional librarians is just one example of what CCFL can do for you as a TSCPA member.

Your Secret is Safe
“I think I have a problem, but I’m afraid to talk about it. I don’t want people to see me as weak and unable to control my drinking, even though I had a scare last week when I drove home and don’t remember how I got there. Is there someone I can talk to without the world knowing about it?” Your secret is safe with us. The Accountants Confidential Assistance Network.
