Message from the President
The Southeast Texas Chapter train is rolling! There are even more learning and networking opportunities for you in November. The Auditing Update eight-hour CPE program will be presented by Mike Inzina on Nov. 9 at the Beaumont MCM Eleganté Hotel. The deadline for preregistration has passed but, as at all our events during the year, we’ll keep on accepting walk-in registrations until the facility can’t hold any more. For information, phone the CPE registration desk at 800-428-0272.
Next Chapter Meeting

viewing 10:30 a.m.
Meeting 11:00 a.m.

Nov. 27 brings a Steve Tillinger program: an eight-hour workshop on Taxation of LLC Operations, in the meeting rooms at the Beaumont Civic Center Complex. Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, please preregister by Nov. 15 to ensure your seat at the table.

To provide members the opportunity to experience a variety of local venues, the next Chapter meeting will be at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas (.PDF) in downtown Beaumont. The Nov. 29 event will include a free one-hour CPE presentation, an update on technical developments in the profession provided by TSCPA Chairman-elect Steve Goodman and ED/CEO John Sharbaugh.

Registration starts at 10:30 a.m., which allows time for networking and a quick tour of the museum before the meeting is convened at 11 a.m. Chapter business to be conducted includes presentation of the slate for 2008-2009 officers and board members by the Nominations Committee. Every effort will be made to adjourn by 1 p.m.
Since the CPE at the Nov. 29 meeting is being provided by the Chapter at no additional charge, we ask that members bring a donation of either food or cash for the Southeast Texas Food Bank.

A special “thank you” goes out to Charlotte Jungen, Carmel Myers and Jane Whitfield for arranging these and the other exciting events during the 2007-2008 year. There’s plenty of room for you on the Chapter train. We’re eager to welcome you. Come on aboard!

October Chapter Event
More than $3,400 for accounting scholarships was raised at the 15th Annual Accounting Scholarship Classic Golf Tournament Oct. 22.

Participants and volunteer helpers at the Brentwood Country Club braved cloudy skies and then a windy rainstorm before play was cancelled but their enthusiasm for the cause remained undampened.

A special high five goes to Mike Frank for putting together the event and pulling in sponsors from Golden Triangle business communities.

CPAs, candidates and student members filled the room for the Oct. 30 Chapter luncheon meeting, held at the MCM Eleganté Hotel. There were 55 present to hear Agent Anne Figueiras tell about the work the Federal Bureau of Investigation is doing to keep America safe, including her work as Kidnapping Coordinator for the Houston District.

Practitioner Questions for the IRS
The TSCPA Relations with the IRS Committee meets with the Internal Revenue Service, meeting normally in Austin at least twice a year with IRS representatives from the Stakeholder Section. Problems practitioners have with the IRS are discussed and if the answer is not readily available, the IRS takes the question back to the office and then forwards the answer to the practitioner.

The IRS members typically are the heads of the several branches, audit, CID, Collection, and many others. Asking questions about the many practitioner problems is available to all members of TSCPA. John Lindell, the Southeast Texas Chapter member serving on the TSCPA committee, is prepared to accept your questions and will forward them to the TSCPA Coordinator, Regulation and Legislation who works with the Committee.

An agenda is created from the questions forwarded by practitioners or from the Committee members. Minutes are maintained and are forwarded to TSCPA and published. You many contact John in writing at: John Eric Lindell, PC, 3128 Saba Lane, Port Neches, TX 77651; Email-JohnL@portarthur.com or call his office at 409-729-1272 during normal working hours.

TSCPA News & Information

Member Recruitment
CPApalooza is rocking the state through Dec. 14. The chapter challenges have been issued and your chapter has an opportunity to win recognition and a fun challenge prize for your efforts.

Members who recruit new members will receive rewards, and new members will be entered in a prize drawing. Get more details and online membership applications.

Financial Literacy
Do you enjoy speaking about personal finance and small business topics? If so, sign up for TSCPA’s speakers bureau. TSCPA is looking for CPAs to speak at community and civic programs and to the media. There are talking points, speeches and PowerPoint presentations to make each speaking opportunity as easy as possible. The speakers bureau is one way for CPAs to become involved in TSCPA’s ongoing 360 Degrees of Financial Literacy effort. To volunteer, contact Avery Roth. (E-mail aroth@tscpa.net; phone 800-428-0272, ext. 688, or 972-687-8688.)

Chapters Get New CPA-PAC Goals
It’s a new year for the CPA-PAC, and that means new fundraising goals for each of TSCPA’s 20 chapters.

Check out what dollar amount your chapter will be striving to achieve in 2007-2008, then consider making a contribution toward that goal. Seventy-five percent of your contribution will remain in your chapter to support local legislative candidates.
