Message from the President
October brings a tax-filing deadline for many . . . and, after that, opportunities to benefit from what the Chapter has to offer you.

First is the 15th Annual Accounting Scholarship Classic Golf Tournament on Monday, Oct. 22. The format will be a scramble, which makes participation fun and easy.

First prize will be given for the lowest gross team score. Everyone has a chance to win one of four other prizes drawn from the bowl of completed score cards. We’re eager to involve players, sponsors and those who simply want to make a donation for Lamar University accounting scholarships.

As part of the mix of Chapter events members have requested, the October meeting will be held at lunch. On Tuesday the 30th, we’ll gather at the MCM Eleganté Hotel. Registration/networking begins at 11 a.m. and the meeting at 11:30 a.m. Our guest speaker is Anne Figaris, Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with a presentation about child safety.

We will also have two important items of Chapter business to conduct: election of Nominations Committee members and a vote on proposed Bylaws revisions. Please make your reservation now!

September Chapter Event
CPA Homecoming was the theme for the first meeting of the 2007-2008 year, which was a huge success. Chapter members networked with Lamar accounting students at the John Gray Library on the campus of the university Thursday, Sept. 27.

CPAs had the opportunity to meet with those will shape the future of the profession and collegians had an opportunity to connect with potential employers. Students who were there signed up for the year of complimentary TSCPA membership sponsored by the Chapter.

Benefits include a $250 discount on a Becker CPA Exam review course and participation in Chapter events. Thanks to Dr. Howell Lynch for making arrangements to hold this meeting on campus at the beautiful John Gray Library!

Resumé Results
Results rule in resumé writing—according to Terry Gallagher, president of Battalia Winston International, a New York-based executive search firm. Quoted in The Wall Street Journal, Gallagher says he places "three times as much value on results versus responsibilities on a resumé."

So how can you boast about yourself without seeming a braggart?

Keep to a strict chronological format — and integrate the accomplishments into each job listing. If your resumé is longer than one page, highlight selected accomplishments at the beginning.
Having a hard time recalling accomplishments in previous positions? Look back on annual reviews, noting what supervisors identified as your key strengths. Their comments may jog your memory — helping you recall how you used those strengths to meet goals.

Member Recruitment Campaign
Every TSCPA member has the opportunity to benefit from recruiting another! An autumn recruitment campaign began Sept. 4 and runs through Dec. 14.

* Each CPA member who recruits a new CPA member will receive a $50 CPE voucher to be used on TSCPA CPE courses. (Some restrictions apply, and they will be noted on the voucher.)

* A CPA member who recruits 10 new student/candidate members will receive a $50 CPE voucher to be used on TSCPA CPE courses. (Some restrictions apply, and they will be noted on the voucher.)

* Every new CPA member will receive a gift and will be entered in a drawing to win prizes.

* A student/candidate member who recruits another student/candidate member will be entered in a drawing to win prizes.

To make recruitment easy, there are online resources that explain the benefits of TSCPA membership and a convenient form to sign up online.

(First-time members can join for just $119 and CPAs sworn in during 2007 are eligible for FREE membership.)

Go to the Join TSCPA button on the Web site at tscpa.org to get more information.

Workplace Financial Literacy Program
TSCPA’s workplace financial literacy program is called Money Management U. and it offers free resources for employers to distribute to employees.

Visit ValueYourMoney.org to download Money Management U.’s flyers for bulletin boards, table tents for break rooms, and paycheck inserts in both English and Spanish. The materials cover a variety of personal finance topics like buying a house, preparing for a disaster, preventing identity theft, and more.

Raising the Profession’s Profile
in Your Community
Autumn is a great time for individual CPAs and their employers and firms to promote the profession in their communities. Here are five ways that you can boost the profession’s profile in your community and make a difference where you live:

1.
Donate goods or services as a silent auction item for a local school’s annual fundraising effort.
2. Speak to a group of students about the opportunities available to them when they choose a career in accounting.
3. Participate in the “Adopt-a-Highway” program, and do your part to keep Texas beautiful.
4. Sponsor a youth football team.
5. Purchase children’s books or school supplies for a school serving an economically disadvantaged neighborhood or community.
